What is a massage oil candle?

A Pompadour massage oil candle is essentially a soy candle which is enhanced with natural oils of jojoba and shea butter, known for their moisturizing, protective and healing properties. Because the candle melts at just above body temperature, the warm candle ingredients can be applied to the skin after extinguishing the flame.

A Pompadour massage oil candle is not intended to fragrance a room. Pompadour massage oil candles contain a blend of skin safe fragrant and essential oils in low amounts, which are suitable for body use.

Light the candle for around 15 minutes or until a pool of oil forms to the containers edge (this also ensures that the candle burns evenly on every use). After extinguishing the flame, dip your fingers into the oil or drizzle a small amount of warm oil into your hands. The candle will take about 15 minutes to re-solidify after it has been extinguished. What is candle tunnelling and how can I avoid it?

Ever bought a candle and soon ended up with a half used un-useable waxy mess and a drowned candle wick? This is very frustrating, and something I have experienced a number of times with expensive candles until I learned more about how to care for my candle and why this in fact occurs.

Firstly, what exactly is candle tunnelling? Tunnelling occurs when a candle’s melt pool doesn’t extend to the edge of the glass. The candle burns down the middle of the glass instead, leaving lots of wax stuck to the side of the jar.

Candles can tunnel as a result of the incorrect wick size or type being used in the manufacture of the candle. However, tunnelling can also be caused by failure to keep your candle lit long enough on the initial burn or before you extinguish it.

To avoid candle tunnelling, it is essential to follow the following steps:

1.When burning your candle for the first time, it is important to give it a 'memory burn’ whereby the melt pool is extended to the edge of the glass.

2. Burn one hour for each inch of its diameter. A full melt pool with increase the scent throw of the candle. Failure to follow this will result in tunnelling.

3. Each time you burn your candle, try to burn it at least until the wax reaches the edge of the container. If you need to extinguish your candle early, plan to burn it a little longer the next time. This should prevent your candle from tunnelling.

4. Be sure to keep your wick straight, and pinch/cut the wick back prior to lighting.

That way you can avoid disappointments, and enjoy your candle perfectly from start to finish!

Born Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson, she later became mistress to the monarch Louis XV of France, and given the title of Marquise de Pompadour. She was also known as Reinette or "little queen", a name she was given aged 9, when her mother took her to a fortune teller, and is was prophesied that she would one day become mistress to a King. She was intelligent, beautiful, and educated, could sing, dance, act, play the clavichord. She had a keen interest in literature and gave patronage to Philosopher, Voltaire. She encouraged the manufacture of porcelain, decorated Versailles and commissioned art. After her death, Voltaire said of her: ‘Born sincere, she loved the King for himself; she had righteousness in her soul and justice in her heart; all this is not to be met with every day.’

Why Hand Made Soap

At Pompadour, we pride ourselves on reviving the traditional cold method of soap making, to craft luxurious soap, which is made in small, quality controlled batches by hand, then naturally air-dried to create a heavier, longer-lasting bar. We do not use pre-manufactured bases, so our soaps are made from scratch. We use a blend of food grade (edible) oils: olive, coconut and rice bran. These oils are then combined with a sodium hydroxide solution and stirred together to create soap. Just prior to pouring the saponified oils into our molds, we add our essential oil and fragrance oil blends. After 48 hours, the soap is removed from the mold and racked for air curing. We allow our soap to cure for at least 8 weeks. The end result is a mild soap that nourishes your skin.

We believe that crafting anything by hand adds a special and authentic element. Because of the skill, time, care and effort taken in individually crafting each soap, the item becomes more meaningful. The purchaser receives something that is created with care and attention that can be seen and touched. This craftsmanship is absent in the world of large-scale manufacturing. Until the industrial revolution, soap making was done on a small scale by hand. Purchasing hand made soap reconnects us to the local and human sources of our goods.

With the advent of the industrial revolution, soap manufacturing practices radically altered what was traditionally called “soap”. The industrial process focuses around production levels, and materials are chosen with attention to ensuring they are fast and economical to produce. To keep up with quantities, a totally automated process was required, which involves manipulating the ingredients. Commercial soap making starts not with whole vegetable and animal fats and oils as in the cold process method, but with substances withdrawn from these fats and oils (called isolated fatty acids). The acids no longer contain any vitamins, proteins or unsaponifiables. Glycerine is the best part of soap, as it attracts moisture to the skin and leaves it soft and supple, yet commercial soap makers commonly extract and on sell the glycerine for use in moisturisers and cosmetics, where it commands a higher price. Commercial soap also commonly contains animal based ingredients, and sodium laurel sulphates - an inexpensive synthetic industrial detergent commonly used, to increase lather and foam. It is a highly corrosive chemical, which dries skin by stripping the protective oils from the surface so it can't effectively regulate moisture. SLS is also used in garage floor cleaners and engine degreasers.

Pompadour products contain no palm oil. Why?

Palm oil is an edible plant oil extracted from palm fruit, now widely used to make food, soap, personal care products and candles. 80% of the world's palm oil production is in Indonesia and Malaysia, where irreplaceable rainforests that are home to a myriad of wildlife including Sumatran Tiger, Sumatran Rhinoceros, Borneo Orangutans, Asian Elephant and the Clouded Leopard are being destroyed. Their habitats are rapidly disappearing, due to the high level of demand for palm oil. Currently an area of forest equal to 300 soccer fields is being destroyed in Indonesia every hour as a result of demand for palm oil. Orangutans are within 20 years of extinction in the wild, as they are killed daily in palm oil plantations. Fires burning across Borneo and Sumatra are also fuelling global warming.

While those who purchase ‘sustainable palm oil’ certainly have the best intentions, we choose not to use palm oil at all as there are still no guarantees. While the Roundtable of Sustainable Palm Oil was formed in 2004, it is dominated 90% by palm oil industry bodies and corporations to ensure continued expansion of the palm oil industry. Membership can be simply purchased and there is no requirement for plantations to be certified. “With high volumes, it is extremely difficult to properly audit the supply chain during the certification process, especially when the raw materials are originating from so many different sources. In addition, under the RSPO system, companies can blend “sustainable” and “non-sustainable” oils at the mill level. This creates the perfect opportunity for misrepresentation. Finally, the mill, along with its directly-owned supply base, receives the certification. However the mill may continue to purchase palm oil from non-company, non-certified sources for a period of three years”.
